Press Release from Carrigaline GAA Club
Anger and disappointment from the Carrigaline GAA club following the announcement that their application for a Sports Capital Programme Grant was rejected, despite having a detailed submission with the department for the past six months.
Kevin O’Driscoll club Chairman, remarked that the club have an ambitious five year development plan for the club catering upwards of 1000 adults and youngsters in the region, to purchase and develop a new pitch, an all-weather training pitch and drainage and lights on the main pitch and the plan was launched by the then President of the GAA Christy Cooney and the full support of local politicians and councillors back in July 2011. A copy of the application was also presented to local Minister Simon Coveney TD on a visit to the club during the year.
“Since then, we have put up the lights and purchased the field adjacent to the club, but the grant was to be used to cover some of the cost of forming the new playing pitch, which is due to start early next year, and would have given us a great boost. To say that we are bitterly disappointed is a bit of an understatement” he added.
The club will be spending about €500,000 on the project with at least €50,000 of this going to the government in VAT and taxes. This is a bitter pill to swallow with nothing coming back.
The application was put in on June 1st of this year, and the club were only notified that their application was ‘invalid’ last Sunday morning. “It’s taken them that long to notify us – why weren’t we informed earlier and just why was the application invalid. We have heard nothing on the reason why” added Kevin.
The club will continue to press on with the development ‘regardless’ and the club will continue to look to the local community for their assistance who have been wonderful supporters of the club for many years. “We have to continue on” added Kevin, “We’ve put too much into this project already and we have to cater for the ever increasing numbers in the club and safeguard the future of the club in Carrigaline”
Kevin added that the tennis club, who are presently located on the GAA Clubs land, were successful with their application and wished them the very best in their development in the coming year. ‘We are really delighted for the Tennis Club, who have been great supporters of the GAA Club over the past twenty years, and who have put so much effort into providing their own independent facilities on their own site. The move of the Tennis Club will allow the GAA to complete its five year plan with the provision of an ‘All-weather’ training area where the Tennis Club is presently located. We wish them every success with their project’ Kevin commented.

New Match Day Arrangements for Pairc Ui Chaoimh Double-Header
Significant new traffic and parking arrangements will be in operation for this Sunday’s National League double header at Pairc Ui Chaoimh when Cork hurlers play Galway and the county footballers meet Kerry.
The arrangements are part of a series of initiatives which are being put in place to mitigate the impacts of Pairc Ui Chaoimh events on local residents.
Gardai have informed Cork County Board that there will be increased enforcement of parking regulations in the environs of Pairc Ui Chaoimh and on approach roads to the venue.
Vehicular access to Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Sunday will be through Centre Park Road and Monahan Road only. Free parking will be available to matchgoers at the former Ford site near the top of Centre Park Road/Monahan Road which is a few minutes walk from the stadium.
There will be increased use of barriers at residential areas on Sunday and a presence in these areas of Gardai and GAA stewards. Increased policing and tow away services will be in position.
Garda have requested motorists to observe parking regulations and if using on-street parking, to do so appropriately, in compliance with the law and with due concern for the needs of others.
Bob Ryan, chairman of Cork County Board, also appealed to match goers to comply with the new arrangements. “ We have been in discussion with local residents and are very conscious of the effects of indiscriminate parking by a minority of match goers. We also want to streamline transportation to and from the stadium. As part of our plans to re-develop Pairc Ui Chaoimh, we are working with the Gardai, Cork City Council, service providers and local residents to put in place new systems and facilities for events being held at Pairc Ui Chaoimh. These will provide options for matchgoers and will benefit everyone in due course,” he said
